A drop spindle is not only an excellent entry to the world of hand spinning, it is perfect for taking out and about for spinning on the go or for sampling small quantities of fibre.
Drop spindles can be top whorl (the whorl is near the top of the shaft), bottom whorl (the whorl is near the bottom of the shaft) or Turkish spindles (instead of a whorl there are 2 cross pieces near the bottom of the shaft; the shaft and cross pieces can be removed when the spinning is completed, leaving a ready wound ball of yarn).
